Regulatory compliance is the foundation of credibility, efficiency, and long-term sustainability in Canada’s ocean economy. Yet navigating the overlapping frameworks of federal legislation, provincial regulation, sector-specific rules, and Indigenous governance can be one of the most complex challenges ocean professionals face.
This course provides a structured, practical guide to the key laws, regulatory bodies, and approval processes that govern ocean-related activities in Canada. Delivered across four modules, learners will move from federal ocean zones and major Acts, through provincial and territorial statutes, into sector-specific regulatory requirements, and finally into the compliance and overlap challenges that arise in real-world practice.
With an emphasis on practical application—including how to map project timelines, prioritize compliance tasks, and identify when Indigenous or co-management engagement is required—this course prepares ocean professionals to operate confidently within Canada’s regulatory environment.
