Module 1: Federal Ocean Governance

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify the major federal Acts that govern Canada's oceans and describe their scope and enforcement
  • Explain how Canada's federal laws support international commitments such as UNCLOS and IMO conventions
  • Describe real-world examples where federal Acts shaped outcomes, including historic and modern cases
  • Recognize the role of federal laws in everyday operations across shipping, conservation, and workers' rights

 

Module 2: Provincial and Territorial Ocean Governance

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Summarize key statutes per province or territory that affect ocean and Great Lakes activities
  • Explain how provincial Crown-land tenures and discharge permits interact with federal approvals
  • Identify the role of Indigenous co-management boards in licensing and monitoring
  • Spot potential overlaps between provincial and federal rules and suggest coordination steps
  • Map a coastal project timeline showing when provincial, federal, and Indigenous permits are needed

 

Module 3: Industry-Specific Regulatory Requirements

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the scope of each featured ocean sector and the legislation that impacts it
