Course 1: Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge

This course explores the foundations of Indigenous rights and governance in Canada, including Section 35 of the Constitution Act, historic and modern treaties, and the implementation of UNDRIP through Canada’s UNDRIP Act. Learners will examine the distinction between rights-holders and stakeholders and why First Nations, Inuit, and Métis hold constitutionally and internationally affirmed rights.

The course emphasizes respectful engagement principles—such as early relationship-building, observing community protocols, and supporting free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC). Participants will learn how to integrate Indigenous Knowledge with Western science through approaches like Two-Eyed Seeing (Etuaptmumk) to strengthen ocean stewardship. Ethical guidelines, including OCAP®, CARE Principles, and TCPS2 Chapter 9, will be covered, alongside examples of Indigenous leadership in ocean management, such as Guardians programs, Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreements, and collaborative marine planning initiatives.

Course 2: Ocean Industry Landscape

This course will provide a broad overview of Canada’s ocean economy, including major sectors, geographic hubs, workforce trends, and future opportunities. Content will highlight the diversity of marine industries such as fisheries, aquaculture, ocean technology, marine tourism, and offshore energy, with an emphasis on sustainability and innovation.

Land Acknowledgment

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge Moh’kinsstis and the traditional Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. Finally, we recognize all Nations who live, work and play on this land and honour and celebrate this territory.
