Speaker: Monique Haakensen
Founder, President, and Principal Scientist - Contango Strategies Ltd.

Monique Haakensen, PhD, is a scientist and entrepreneur recognized for her leadership in environmental microbiology and clean technology. She is the founder, President, and Principal Scientist of Contango Strategies, a Saskatoon-based firm specializing in microbiology-driven solutions for the natural resources and energy sectors. With a doctorate in microbiology, genomics, and bioinformatics from the University of Saskatchewan, where she also serves as an Adjunct Professor, she has been acknowledged nationally as one of Canada’s top young entrepreneurs and was the youngest appointee to the federal Science, Technology and Innovation Council. Her expertise spans passive water treatment, constructed wetlands, and genetic microbial profiling, and she has shared her insights through platforms such as TEDx.

Microbes impact many aspects of mining operations, from processing, to water treatment, through closure planning. Knowledge of modern day methods, tools, and applications in microbial profiling allows organizations to derisk decision-making and more effectively allocate funds to appropriate actions, including system designs and process optimization.

Advances in microbial technologies in the past 5 years have revolutionized understanding and accessibility of testing. One of the fastest growing applications of microbial community profiling in the mining sector is through increased demand for passive water treatment in closure being placed on mining operations (which relies on natural and accelerated microbial processes).

Understanding and the application of microbial community profiling provides mining operations the opportunity to differentiate themselves as leaders in technology, innovation, and sustainability.

Why is this webinar topic important for environmental professionals?

With advances in microbial technologies in recent years, there is increased demand for passive water treatment for mining operations.

Environmental professionals working in mining operations can help their organization differentiate themselves as leaders in technology, innovation and sustainability by understanding the application of microbial community profiling.

Land Acknowledgment

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge Moh’kinsstis and the traditional Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. Finally, we recognize all Nations who live, work and play on this land and honour and celebrate this territory.
