The ocean has no borders. From shipping lanes to conservation zones, the activities that happen at sea are shaped by a complex web of international treaties, intergovernmental organizations, and regional governance bodies. For ocean professionals working across national boundaries—or within them—understanding this global architecture is increasingly essential.
This course introduces learners to the major conventions, frameworks, and institutions that govern international marine activity and conservation. You will explore the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ), Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), and the intergovernmental bodies that coordinate global ocean governance. The course traces how these international frameworks connect to national policy implementation and what they mean for professionals working in ocean industries, conservation, or marine policy.
Designed for early to mid-career professionals seeking a broader understanding of the global ocean governance landscape, this course provides the conceptual foundation needed to engage with international partners, navigate cross-border challenges, and position projects within a global policy context.
