Strong teams start with flexible leadership. In this course, you’ll explore how to choose and use the right leadership style for any scenario.
In today’s dynamic work environments, effective leadership means knowing when and how to adjust your approach. Leaders must read the moment, the mission, and the makeup of their team—and then lead accordingly.
In this course, you’ll explore five widely used leadership styles, understand their strengths and limitations, and learn how to apply them strategically to different contexts and team dynamics.
In partnership with:
Understand what a leadership style is, why it matters, and how it influences team performance. In this module, you’ll be introduced to the primary leadership styles and learn about their history.
This module explores the “hands-off” leadership style that gives teams full autonomy with minimal direction. You’ll learn when this approach works best (such as with skilled, self-motivated teams) and how it can foster innovation, trust, and accountability. We’ll also cover potential pitfalls like lack of clarity or direction and how to avoid them.
This module covers the directive, top-down leadership style where the leader makes decisions independently and expects compliance. You’ll examine how this approach can be effective in high-pressure or high-risk situations that demand quick, decisive action, and explore the trade-offs (such as reduced team input, innovation, and morale) when used in the wrong context.
This section explores a participative leadership style that involves team members in the decision-making process. You’ll learn how this approach fosters engagement, creativity, and stronger commitment to outcomes, while also considering challenges like slower decisions and potential conflict. It’s ideal for situations where collaboration, team expertise, and long-term cohesion are key.
Learn how transactional leadership uses clear structures, performance targets, and reward systems to drive results. This module outlines where the approach is most effective (like in sales or process-driven roles) and discusses its strengths in promoting accountability and consistency, as well as its limitations in fostering creativity or long-term engagement.
Explore how transformational leadership inspires teams through vision, trust, and a shared sense of purpose. This module highlights how the style drives engagement, innovation, and growth—both personal and organizational—while also addressing the challenges of maintaining structure and delivering on ambitious goals. Ideal for leading change, shaping culture, and developing future leaders.
