Following the adoption of Yellowknife’s Community Energy Plan in 2006, the City moved to incorporate energy efficiency requirements into new home and large-building construction, an effort that initially faced strong opposition from local developers.
Through clear and consistent communication, a detailed cost-benefit analysis, and a phased transition period that helped builders understand the advantages of higher-efficiency standards, Yellowknife became one of the first Canadian municipalities to implement such regulatory change successfully.
This session with ECO Canada and Mark Heyck highlights the strategies, challenges, and key insights that other communities can apply when advancing their own energy-efficiency policies.

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge Moh’kinsstis and the traditional Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. Finally, we recognize all Nations who live, work and play on this land and honour and celebrate this territory.
