Module 1: Understanding Delegation

Objective: Define what skilled delegation is and why it matters for leadership.
Key Topics:

  • Delegation is the intentional transfer of responsibility, not accountability
  • Benefits include freeing up leadership capacity and building team capability
  • Delegation empowers with planning and support—not dumping tasks
  • Effective delegation improves focus, trust, and strategic execution

Module 2: Why People Don’t Delegate

Objective: Identify mindset barriers that prevent effective delegation and how to overcome them.
Key Topics:

  • Common blockers: perfectionism, fear of failure, control, or burdening others
  • Limiting beliefs often trade long-term growth for short-term ease
  • Reframe delegation as development, not risk
  • Letting go with clarity builds trust and capacity

Module 3: The Delegation Framework

Objective: Apply a repeatable 5-step method to delegate tasks clearly and effectively.
Key Topics:

  • Choose the right task and the right person based on readiness and goals
  • Set clear expectations: outcomes, timelines, constraints
  • Provide resources and space for questions and learning
  • Follow up regularly and give meaningful, coaching-focused feedback

Module 4: Delegating the Right Tasks to the Right People

Objective: Match tasks to team members based on type, fit, and opportunity.
Key Topics:

  • Use a Delegation Matrix to assess what to delegate: repetitive, developmental, strategic, or urgent
  • Align tasks with skills, interests, and development needs
  • Balance team workload and avoid over-delegating to the same person
  • Delegation should support both task completion and talent development

Module 5: Keeping Control Without Micromanaging

Objective: Maintain visibility and accountability while promoting autonomy.
Key Topics:

  • Empowered oversight focuses on outcomes, not how-tos
  • Set check-ins and milestones without hovering
  • Use open questions and coaching to support progress
  • When things go wrong, use the moment to coach, not criticize

Land Acknowledgment

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge Moh’kinsstis and the traditional Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. Finally, we recognize all Nations who live, work and play on this land and honour and celebrate this territory.
